How to create your own version of self care
The world we live in today is very different from the world of our grandparents.
We all suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out).
We over-commit, overextend, and over-promise for the sake of being relevant or needed.
Often we literally work ourselves into poor health by ignoring our personal self-care for the sake of pleasing others.
While most of us want to be overachievers, all of us want to live our best life.
You cannot live your best life without practicing self-care.
Launching a business has put this self-care in the forefront of my mind.
I can get so caught up in the excitement of being an entrepreneur that I neglect the warning signs.
You can only stay up late and wake up early so many times before your soul and body begins to succumb to the negative effects of neglect.
Don’t let this happen to you.
And if you are already on the hustle and grind please keep reading.
Self-care is going to look different for each person.
What one person finds relaxing and pleasant another person might find stressful and exhausting.
Here are some simple steps you can take to create your own version of self-care:
1. Make space on your calendar for me time. I know we like to feel like we need a week off or a day away but often times refreshment can come in 5 minute sessions with yourself. I have found it to be very relaxing to simply turn on some classic music or my favorite the Calm app and just zone out and focus on stillness and intentional deep breathing.
2. Do something that sets your soul on fire. That might be going to the spa, cooking something out of the norm, taking yourself to a fancy meal out, binge watching a Netflix drama, going for a walk, lying on the grass in the sun, treating yourself to a pedicure or booking a trip somewhere exotic. Whatever it is, find your thing. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s, but it has to make you feel alive and happy!
3. Set a mini goal. I know we watch shows that always do extreme things like Extreme Makeover, The Biggest Losers, Dating Naked and Married At First Sight, but reality is not extreme for most of us. So you might find it comforting and rewarding to set small goals for yourself that will enrich your experience as human. Maybe you need to drink more water. Maybe you want to get your coffee consumption down to one cup a day. Maybe you want to connect with your community more. Whatever makes you come alive, do that!
4. Rest. Even if you are not a napper, it is wise to just let the body chill. Your cells will reward you by powering up once you get back into slay the day mode.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money, in fact you may not have to spend any, but you have to make time to care for yourself in order to show up as a strong, vibrant and effective human.
Burnout will come if you don’t plan to love yourself well.
